This Halloween, Gothic Opera presents German horror story Die Rheinnixen (The Nixies of the Rhine) by Offenbach.
Set between the world wars, the story takes place in the chaos, unease and growing nationalism of the Weimar Republic. People are not what they seem…and the supernatural is never far away.
Featuring a cast of exciting singers and a chamber orchestra, this atmospheric production will feature visuals inspired by the ‘dream factory’ of German expressionist cinema. Join us for the UK staged premiere of an intense, musically rich horror story that has been neglected for 160 years.

Biographies
Gothic Opera
Based in London, award-winning female-led company Gothic Opera is becoming increasingly well known among audiences, critics, and artists for their bold, atmospheric productions of rarely-heard operatic works with supernatural themes.
The company was founded in 2019 by Alice Usher, Béatrice de Larragoïti and Charlotte Osborn, with producer Helene Mathiesen joining the team a few years later. Their Halloween 2021 opera La Nonne sanglante (The Bloody Nun) was the winner of the Opera Production category in the Off-West End Awards. The company’s 2024 season saw two opera productions: the revival of Der Vampyr – the production that first launched Gothic Opera – at the Grimeborn Festival; and the UK premiere of Maria de Rudenz at Battersea Arts Centre.
